Its revival, such as it is, continues to be a work in progress. Very . . . slow . . . progress. For now, St. Louis remains what it’s been for decades, albeit with a new ballpark: a struggling city. But there are pockets in which the heart still beats, and much of the beat is to the blues.
When an awestruck David Livingstone first saw Victoria Falls in 1855 during his four-year journey along the Zambezi River in southern Africa, he wrote in his journal: “On sights as beautiful as this, angels in their flight must have gazed.” Livingstone named the falls after the queen of England, but they were (and still are) known in the local Kololo language as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “The Smoke That Thunders.” It’s easy to loft lengthy adjectives at Victoria Falls, often labeled one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World.” However, there is much more to Victoria Falls than the waterfall itself. The nearby town of Livingstone, Zambia, is also the extreme-sports capital of southern Africa, with heaps of travel and adventure companies. Adrenaline junkies in need of a quick fix while traversing Africa have a menu of activities to get the blood pumping, like Victoria Falls itself.
